How to Use Google Gemini in China (2026 Guide)

People searching “Gemini China” or “Gemini VPN” usually run into two separate problems at once and treat them as one. This guide separates them, walks through each Gemini surface, and explains what common error messages actually mean. If you also use other assistants, see our sibling guides on ChatGPT in China and Claude in China, or the side-by-side overview in ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini options in China.

What “available” really means: two separate layers

Layer 1: network reachability. Google services, including gemini.google.com, are generally not reachable on ordinary mainland China networks. This is a connection-path problem: pages time out, sign-in loops, or the app spins without loading. Our guide on accessing Google in China covers this layer in more detail.

Layer 2: account and region eligibility. Even with a working connection, Google decides who may use each Gemini product based on location, account type and age. These rules differ per surface:

  • Google’s page on where you can use the Gemini web app says the web app is offered in over 230 countries and territories. At the time of writing, that list includes Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan, and lists mainland China with a “Workspace only” note.
  • The Gemini mobile apps have their own, shorter country list (more than 150 countries), and mainland China does not appear on it.
  • The Gemini API and Google AI Studio have a separate regions list again. Mainland China and Hong Kong are not on it at the time of writing; Taiwan is.

Fixing Layer 1 does not change Layer 2. Please follow Google’s terms and its supported-region policy for each product, and check Google’s current pages, since these lists change.

Account and age basics

According to Google’s sign-in requirements for Gemini Apps, you need to be 13 (or the applicable age in your country) or older to use Gemini with a personal or school account, and 18 or older with a work account. Personal accounts must be ones you manage yourself. Some regions (for example the EEA, Switzerland and the UK) set the age at 18; check Google’s page for your situation. Google AI Studio and the Gemini API require users to be 18 or older, per the available regions page.

Surface-by-surface notes

Web app (gemini.google.com)

The web app is the most widely offered surface. Google lists Chrome, Safari, Firefox, Opera and Edge as supported browsers. If you are a resident of a supported region temporarily in mainland China, the usual obstacle is the network path, not the product itself. If your account or location is outside Google’s list, a better connection will not make it eligible.

Android app

Google’s mobile page lists Android 9 or later and at least 2 GB of RAM, and notes Android Go devices are excluded. The app is distributed through Google Play, which itself needs a working connection to Google. Many phones sold in mainland China ship without Google Play services; check your device before assuming the app is at fault.

iOS

Older guides say Gemini on iPhone lives inside the Google app. Google’s current mobile page now describes a dedicated Gemini app on iOS. App Store listings depend on your Apple ID’s region, so the app may not appear in every storefront. Check Google’s current page and Apple’s storefront rules rather than changing account regions to get around them.

Gemini API and Google AI Studio

Developers face the strictest rules here. Google’s regions page (last updated 2026-04-28 at the time of writing) lists three common blockers: an unsupported region, the 18+ age requirement, and an unverified account age. For users outside the listed regions, that page suggests the Gemini API in Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform on Google Cloud (the successor branding for Vertex AI; check Google Cloud’s current documentation). Cloud availability and billing follow Google Cloud’s own terms, so review those with your organization.

Google Workspace

Workspace accounts follow the administrator’s settings. Google’s admin guide for the Gemini app says the app is a core service in most Business, Enterprise, Frontline, Nonprofit and Education editions, is on by default for licensed users over 18, and can be switched off per organizational unit. If Gemini is missing from your work account, ask your administrator before troubleshooting anything else.

Paid plans (Google AI Pro)

Google AI Pro adds more Gemini access and storage. Google’s Google AI Pro help page requires a personal Google Account and lists the supported countries; at the time of writing that list includes Hong Kong but not mainland China. Please subscribe only where Google offers the plan, using a payment method valid under its terms.

Common errors and what they mean

What you see Most likely layer What it usually means
Page never loads, time-outs, endless sign-in loop Network Google is not reachable on your current network path.
Message that Gemini is not available in your country or region Eligibility Your location or account region is outside Google’s list for that surface.
AI Studio: “not available in your region” Eligibility The API and AI Studio regions list does not include your location.
AI Studio: minimum age requirement (18+) Account Your account age is under 18 or not verified; Google points you to age verification in your Google Account.
Work account shows no Gemini Admin Your Workspace admin has not enabled it, or your license does not include it.
App not found in the store Distribution The app is not offered in that storefront or on that device type.

Exact wording changes over time; check Google’s current help pages. Our help center covers connection-side troubleshooting.

Where SSRocket fits

SSRocket is a network acceleration service. It helps with Layer 1: giving your device a working path to the international internet so Google’s pages and apps can load. Setup is covered in our setup guide and the one-click subscription import guide, and you can read about international access on our global access page. Plans are listed on the pricing page.

A connection service cannot fix Layer 2. It does not change your account’s age, region, Workspace license, billing country or eligibility for any Gemini product, and it should not be used to get around Google’s terms. If Google says your account or region is not supported, the answer lies with Google’s policies, not with your connection.

FAQ

Is Gemini officially available in mainland China?
Google’s web app list currently shows mainland China as “Workspace only,” and mainland China is not on the mobile app list or the API regions list. Please check Google’s current pages, as these lists change.

I live in a supported country and am visiting China. Can I keep using Gemini?
Your account eligibility is set by Google. While you travel, the practical issue is usually reaching Google over the local network. A connection service can help with that, but follow Google’s terms on supported locations.

Why does Gemini work in my browser but not in the API?
The web app and the API use different region lists and age rules. The API and AI Studio require users to be 18 or older and have a shorter regions list.

Can SSRocket make my account eligible for Google AI Pro?
No. Plan availability depends on Google’s supported-country list and your account and payment details. SSRocket only helps with the network path.

My work account has no Gemini option. What should I do?
Ask your Workspace administrator. Google lets admins turn the Gemini app on or off for the whole organization or for specific groups.

Should I use Gemini, ChatGPT or Claude?
That depends on your workflow. See our comparison of ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini options in China.
